Embodied Construction Grammar in Simulation-Based Language Understanding

چکیده
We present Embodied Construction Grammar, a formalism for linguistic analysis designed specifically for integration into a simulation-based model of language understanding. As in other construction grammars, linguistic constructions serve to map between phonological forms and conceptual representations. In the model we describe, however, conceptual representations are also constrained to be grounded in the body’s perceptual and motor systems, and more precisely to parameterize mental simulations using those systems. Understanding an utterance thus involves at least two distinct processes: analysis to determine which constructions the utterance instantiates, and simulation according to the parameters specified by those constructions. In this report, we outline a construction formalism that is both representationally adequate for these purposes and specified precisely enough for use in a computational architecture. f This technical report is an interim version (completed October 2001) of a book chapter; in due course we expect the final version to appear in: Jan-Ola Östman and Mirjam Fried (eds.), Construction Grammar(s): Cognitive and Cross-Language Dimensions. Simulated Action in an Embodied Construction Grammar
Various lines of research on language have converged on the premise that linguistic knowledge has as its basic unit pairings of form and meaning. The precise nature of the meanings involved, however, remains subject to the longstanding debate between proponents of arbitrary, abstract representations and those who argue for more detailed perceptuo-motor representations. We propose a model, Embod...
متن کاملNatural Language For Human Robot Interaction
Natural Language Understanding (NLU) was one of the main original goals of artificial intelligence and cognitive science. This has proven to be extremely challenging and was nearly abandoned for decades. We describe an implemented system that supports full NLU for tasks of moderate complexity. The natural language interface is based on Embodied Construction Grammar and simulation semantics. The...
متن کاملCognitive Modeling Approaches to Language Comprehension Using Construction Grammar
This paper examines the relationship between modeling human sentence comprehension using cognitive architectures and approaches to linguistic knowledge representation using construction grammars. We review multiple computational models of language understanding that vary in their use of construction grammar and cognitive architectures. We present a case study: Lucia, that uses Embodied Construc...

Research in the origins and evolution of language has now reached a level where languages with grammatical structures are emerging in computer simulations and robotic experiments based on situated embodied language games played by populations of agents. This paper focuses on some of the technical AI issues related to this research. Specifically, we report on a system for planning complex meanin...

In ScaNaLU 2002, Chang et al presented a scalable natural language formalism called Embodied Construction Grammar (ECG) (Chang et al., 2002). ECG makes deep understanding systems possible because it is a rigorous, unified formalism that incorporates the semantic and pragmatic insights found in cognitive linguistics. The work described in this paper builds on (Chang et al., 2002) because it leve...
